"What is the role of photography when the boundaries between the real and the imaginary become uncertain? The photographers whose work is presented in this issue do not fixate on pre-existing forms and values. They engage with an invisible reality prior to language and attempt to convey it in visible form. In their work, fragments of different memories, realities, and times collide and emerge as images. The past is rewritten by the present. The present is open to the future. One of this magazine's ongoing responsibilities is to embrace this interplay."

■Editor-in-chief's preface
Published in 1997, the photo book "Living" marked the starting point of Masafumi Sanaï’s career and had a profound influence on Japanese photographic expression from the 1990s onward. Received with quiet yet profound impact, this photobook is being reissued after 30 years. To mark this milestone, this issue features a special section on Masafumi Sanai. It includes “Raisha,” in which he travels across the country visiting reproductions of Taro Okamoto’s paintings and sculptures, as well as his recent work, “Strong Memory.” We also present “My Origin,” which moves back and forth between these two projects.
Taro Okamoto once said, “Art today must not be skillful. It must not be beautiful. It must not be comfortable.” Okamoto viewed beauty not as an object to be freely appreciated, but as a force that confronts people and exerts an inescapable influence, a concept he termed the “magical power of beauty.” Rather than seeking order, it is about constant confrontation. That stance remains relevant to this day.
The pure sensibility and unadorned gaze toward the world that underlie Sanai’s photographs are emerging once again as a point of reference in an era where the future is unclear and difficult to predict—an era marked by war, disasters, climate change, and the rapid development of AI. They also prompt us to reexamine our distance from the world—a distance that is often lost amid excessive information and homogenized images.
At a time when the boundary between reality and image is blurring, what role does photography assume? The practices of the photographers featured in this issue—without being subsumed by existing forms or values—visualize an invisible reality that exists prior to language. Fragments of different times, memories, and realities intersect and emerge as images. The past is renewed in the present, and the present opens up toward the future. We believe that embracing this overlap is the role of this magazine.
